Assassin's Creed Valhalla Traitor quest: who betrayed Soma in the Stench of Treachery Quest?
Just as with the other recent more RPG-like Assassin's Creed entries, Assassin's Creed Valhalla is packed full of choice throughout its quest. Eivor is a warrior, but also a mediator, a leader, and occasionally, a detective. Such is the case in the Stench of Treachery quest, which poses a simple question at you: who is the traitor?
On this page, we'll explain the Stench of Treachery quest, detailing what happens in as vague a way as we can - and we'll also name the traitor flat-out, so you can go into the decisions around this quest without any chance of getting it wrong. Naturally, this guide will contain spoilers for the quest.
Who betrayed Soma? The identity of the Traitor in Assassin's Creed Valhalla
You'll encounter this quest after first making the journey across the seas to England. At this point you're posed with a choice between factions - and the Stench of Treachery quest is available as part of the Grantebridgescire, you'll then find yourself with Soma, working to retake the settlement of Grantebridge.
The thing is, the Grantebridge settlement could only have been taken with the help of someone from the inside - a traitor. This weighs heavy upon Soma, and so it's up to Eivor to work as an investigator, searching for clues, questioning those under suspicion as well as potential witnesses.
The quest will send you off to talk to Soma's captains - that's Birna, Lif and Galinn. One of these three is surely the traitor. Each captain is marked as their own quest, and completing that quest will help you to take a little bit more of the surrounding area while also helping you to understand who the traitor is. In real terms, you're supposed to complete all of these quests, uncovering clues that lead you closer and closer to the true identity of the traitor. To get the most from the quest, you must exhaust all dialogue options with each of the characters, plus nearby NPCs.
The answer should become clear through these activities - or you can just read below:
The Traitor's Identity: who betrayed Soma
That's enough waffling, so let us save you some time: The Traitor is Galinn.
When you return to Soma, you'll then be tasked by Soma with making an accusation against one of the three captains. Tell her that the traitor is Galinn and Soma will see him swiftly executed. Viking justice is... well, swift.
What happens if you choose the wrong captain as the traitor? Well, things will go seriously south for Soma and her camp. You'll have an additional boss battle against Galinn as his true traitorous nature is revealed, and naturally that whole ending to this plot-line is something of a bummer. Alternatively, get it right, and everybody will be happy, with a positive ending for all.
In the end, there isn't a major impact on Eivor's adventure either way - Birna does join your crew as a potential participant for raids, which can be helpful as the game progresses - but you want everyone to be happy, right?
