Genshin Impact multiplayer guide: How to begin co-op mode with friends
Genshin Impact lets you explore Teyvat with a buddy, just not immediately. You’ll have to hit a few milestones before inviting a friend to your world (but they aren’t so bad), and keep in mind not all content is available when someone else is visiting. If you’re unfamiliar and new to MiHoYo’s adventure, you should think of it as a single-player RPG first and foremost - it just has additional tasks you can use a friend’s help to complete.
To get you started teaming up with more pals, the guide below will highlight the requirements to unlock Genshin Impact multiplayer, what you can do as a team, and tasks locked to singleplayer mode
Genshin Impact | Unlocking Multiplayer Mode
Genshin Impact’s multiplayer is unlocked at Adventure Rank 16. While the grind in Adventure Rank gets progressively harder as you go, hitting level 16 won’t take too long, and following the story should quickly land you there. Here’s everything you’ll need to get start:
- Reach Adventure Rank 16.
- Complete the quest line up to Lepus Chapter: Act I - Mondstadt Glider.
- Join a friend with the same or lower Word Level and Adventure Rank.
- Access co-op mode by navigating to the Main Menu > Co-Op Mode > Request to Join. You can also edit your World Permissions through this menu, adjusting how other players join you.
Activities Available in Genshin Impact’s Co-Op Mode
Genshin Impact’s multiplayer mode isn’t a campaign co-op situation, but it’s great for farming bosses, domains, and other resources together. Perhaps one of the best things to remember before venturing into this part of the game is to be cautious about allowing strangers to join your world. They can pick up limited resources, leaving you to wait days for valuable ascension materials to respawn - those spoils are not shared.
That being said, there’s plenty of reasons to play together and things you can do with a team of up to four players. Add a friend via their UID and invite them to join, trying content like boss, domain, and enemy farming - rewards from these tasks are given to each player. There are also little side obstacles scattered in the world that you can only complete with a partner.
You can also complete some commission and event tasks, but not all of them will be available. A few of Genshin Impact’s NPCs are unavailable when your world is open to other party members, and tasks can’t be completed under those circumstances. Friends can also check out each other’s Serenitea Pots.
As for things you can’t do in co-op mode, story quests are a no-go. If you find that the multiplayer functionality isn’t available, it’s probably because you’re in the middle of a quest gating you out of the option.
Chests and the Anemo, Geo, and Electro elemental collectibles aren’t shared, either. Even if you see another player pick them up, that won’t count for you, and these are things you’ll need to collect on your own. Also, as highlighted earlier, make sure you’re not picking up resources limited in the world. Ores, ascension materials, and other farmable resources go to the person who picks them up and no one else.
As for shops, you’ll have to close off co-op options if you want to buy things. Several NPCs require you to access them through single-player mode only
