Star Ocean: The Second Story R - Private Actions guide & where to find them

Private Actions, often abbreviated as PAs, are a fundamental mechanic within the Star Ocean franchise - and the same is true in Star Ocean 2: The Second Story R. These interactions provide a space for the protagonist, whether it's Claude or Rena, to engage with their fellow party members in a more private setting. Some interactions are triggered as an event and can influence the affection levels between the protagonist and their companions, potentially leading to specific ending pairings. Furthermore, participating in Private Actions can yield item rewards and uncover optional events. Answering choices wrong can also lead to a decrease in affection level.

For the remake of Star Ocean 2, it is a lot easier to track locations of new Private Actions as they're marked on the map as and Private Actions with a limited time window are marked as . Some events that were Private Actions in the original are now simply just events.

A few notes about affinity in the remake: Star Ocean: The Second Story R:

It's worth noting that in the remake of Star Ocean 2, affinity between characters seems to be bi-directional. If Claude gains affinity with Rena, then Rena will gain an equal amount of affinity with Claude. Many existing guides for older versions will specify a direction for an affinity gain (such as Claude → Rena), but based on the friendship indicator (a meter of hearts in the remake), such a one-sided gain will never happen. So, when reading the below guide, assume any gain or loss in affinity is mutual.
Also, there seems to be no delineation between Friendship Points and Romance Points, as is often cited in existing guides for earlier versions of the game. Everything appears to be set with a meter of 5 hearts. The higher the meter, the more PAs unlock. If the meter is high enough (around 3.5 hearts full), then you will see smaller hearts appear around an icon on the status screen. This will actually indicate which ending you will see for that character, once you beat the final boss. Only one character can have these smaller hearts appear.
