Pokemon Sun & Moon Guide: Everything you need to know about the Starter Pokemon evolutions

One of the more exciting parts of a new Pokemon game is watching your starter grow. Litten, Popplio, and Rowlet all have their individual strengths, which will factor into how trainers will navigate through their mid and endgame.

We already talked a little about which starter you might want to choose on another guide page - but do you want to go deeper? If so - here's what the starter trio will become after several hours' of gameplay. If you want to plan ahead... we've got you. If you've already picked, this will help you know what's coming.

Regardless of which you picked, we have the rundown on all of the evolutions here.

PokeSunMoon_Primarina.png

Primarina - The Soloist Pokemon #730

Tips:

  • Primarina is a water/fairy-type Pokemon. Fairy has gotten a ton of flack for its powerful resistance and immunity combo, but you won't care much about that when it's playing to your team's strengths. Its resistance coverage is pretty stacked, just be wary of poison later on.
  • Primarina may not be the well-rounded tank Incineroar is, but it excels in its special defense. The best choice for trainers that want coverage against specials.
  • Sparkling Aria is Primarina's water-type move, which gives it the ability to cure the burn status affliction and deal damage.

Pokedex entries:

  • Sun: It controls its water balloons with song. The melody is learned from others of its kind and is passed down from one generation to the next.
  • Moon: Its singing voice is its chief weapon in battle. This Pokemon's Trainer must prioritize the daily maintenance of its throat at all costs.

Stats:

  • Evolves at: Level 34
  • HP: 80
  • Attack: 74
  • Defense: 74
  • Sp. Attack: 126
  • Sp. Defense: 116
  • Speed: 60
  • Total: 530
PokeSunMoon_Torracat.png

Torracat  - The Fire Cat Pokemon #726
Pokedex entries:

  • Sun: At its throat, it bears a bell of fire. The bell rings brightly whenever this Pokemon spits fire.
  • Moon: It boasts powerful front legs. With a single punch, it can bend an iron bar right over.

Stats:

  • Evolves at: Level 17
  • HP: 65
  • Attack: 85
  • Defense: 50
  • Sp. Attack: 80
  • Sp. Defense: 50
  • Speed: 90
  • Total: 420
PokeSunMoon_Incineroar.png

Incineroar - The Heel Pokemon #727

Tips:

  • Incineroar is a Fire/Dark-type Pokemon. So, it will ultimately gain some useful resistances, but nothing to write home about. Mostly, fans are just relieved this isn't another fire/fighting generation.
  • Leech Life can be learned by Incineroar, and it has received a big buff this gen. It's an excellent choice for playing the sustain game in battle.
  • Incineroar boasts Darkest Lariat, ignoring the stat changes of enemy Pokemon to deal damage. So if someone thinks they'll be stacking defense against Incineroar, it's over for them.

Pokedex entries:

  • Sun: This Pokemon has a violent, selfish disposition. If it's not in the mood to listen, it will ignore its Trainer's orders with complete nonchalance.
  • Moon: After hurling ferocious punches and flinging furious kicks, it finishes opponents off by spewing fire from around its navel.

Stats:

  • Evolves at: Level 34
  • HP: 95
  • Attack: 115
  • Defense: 90
  • Sp. Attack: 80
  • Sp. Defense: 90
  • Speed: 60
  • Total: 530
PokeSunMoon_Dartrix.png

Dartrix  - The Blade Quill Pokemon #723
Pokedex entries:

  • Sun: A bit of a dandy, it spends its free time preening its wings. Its preoccupation with any dirt on its plumage can leave it unable to battle.
  • Moon: It throws sharp feathers called blade quills at enemies or prey. It seldom misses.

Stats:

  • Evolves at: Level 17
  • HP: 78
  • Attack: 75
  • Defense: 75
  • Sp. Attack: 70
  • Sp. Defense: 70
  • Speed: 52
  • Total: 420
PokeSunMoon_Decidueye.png

Decidueye  - The Arrow Quill Pokemon #724
Tips:

  • Decidueye is a grass/ghost-type Pokemon. This typing combo isn't exactly desirable for defense, as the roster of Pokemon that can really hurt is a long one.
  • Choice Scarf should be a solid solution to Decidueye's less than desirable speed, covering some of its weaknesses.
  • Spirit Shackle has some nasty potential for opponents of Decidueye. Targets are unable to flee from battle or switch out with an ally.

Pokedex entries:

  • Sun: It fires arrow quills from its wings with such precision, they can pierce a pebble at distances over a hundred yards.
  • Moon: Although basically cool and cautious, when it's caught by surprise, it's seized by panic.

Stats:

  • Evolves at: Level 34
  • HP: 78
  • Attack: 107
  • Defense: 75
  • Sp. Attack: 100
  • Sp. Defense: 100
  • Speed: 70
  • Total: 530
