Metaphor ReFantazio main character's real name: Does the protagonist have a canon name?
So you start a game like Metaphor: ReFantazio and you’re left with a dilemma. You don’t just have one character name to fill out, but two. For those decisive individuals who have their wackiest options already picked out (I’m quite fond of Minatwo, the Arisato being implied) then you’re good to go. Atlus has not outright confirmed a canon name for the protagonist of Metaphor, but they clearly had a default one in mind when programming the game.
If you go into the System settings under Configuration you can scroll down to Text Language and change it to one you do not currently have set, the game is programmed to default both your name and the protagonist's name to a set value. If you’re worried about losing your original names however, thankfully you don’t have to be. Your save file’s chosen name for both you and your main character is stored, so if you go back to your save’s initial language both your names will reset to what you’ve chosen.
The player name should be, well, your name probably. It represents yourself, and when changing the text language that’s exactly what it defaults to. In each of the ten languages available to choose from in Metaphor ReFantazio your name will always default to “You”. For example, in French your name will become “Vous” and in German it will become “Du”.
The default protagonist name on the other hand is a bit more concrete. In most languages the protagonist’s name is some variant on “Will”.
Protagonist:
English: Will
German: Willheim
Spanish: Victor
French: Éric
Italian: Victor
Portuguese: Pedro
Russian: Александр (Translates to “Alexander”)
Japanese: ウィル (Translates to “Will”)
Traditional Chinese: 威爾 (Translates to “Will”)
Simplified Chinese: 威尔 (Translates to “Will”)
Korean: 윌 (Translates to “Will”)
Personally, I’m quite fond of Willheim being my choice for the protagonist’s canon name. With the majority of them being variants of “Will” that appears to be what we have to work with right now if you’d like to get as close to a canon experience as possible. Until the upcoming Manga adaptation possibly shakes things up by introducing a completely different name for the protagonist (remember Souji Seta, or Akira Kurusu?) any name in this list will do you just fine.
Edit: In an interview with the Official Xbox Podcast, director and producer Katsura Hashino had this to say on the topic of a "canon name" for Metaphor's protagonist:
