Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Pinnacle of its Kind Quest Guide
There's something strange in the halls of Nevarra's Grand Necropolis, and who does the Mourn Watch call? The Veilguard! The side quest "Pinnacle of its Kind" is a long and involved quest that pits Rook and their Dragon Age: The Veilguard companions against some of the toughest creatures in northern Thedas. Check out our quick guide to finding and clearing this quest, which also happens to be a critical step for obtaining the game's secret post-credits cutscene.
How to Start the Pinnacle of its Kind Quest in Dragon Age: The Veilguard
"Pinnacle of its Kind" is a regional quest for the Mourn Watch faction, located in the Necropolis Halls exploration zone. You'll unlock this map by recruiting Emmrich in the story quest, "Where the Dead Must Go." After Emmrich joins the Veilguard, you'll be able to visit the Necropolis Halls freely and get quests from the Mourn Watch, as well as visit the faction vendor.
You'll also unlock side quests, of which you must complete "Restless Spirits" in order to start "A Pinnacle of its Kind"
Completing "Restless Spirits" is fairly simple, and involves locating and activating a set of Wisp Pedestals around the hub area called the Belfry in order to unlock more places to explore, including a room called The Chamber of the Unforged.
In the course of the quest, you'll enter the Chamber and fight some demons. There Rook will notice that there's another door inside the chamber, one that is sealed shut by three powerful seals. The voice of a powerful demon is also audible, demanding that it be left alone.
Naturally, you can't abide a demon just hanging out in the Necropolis, but you'll need to defeat three other demons scattered throughout different areas to unlock the final door.
Where to Find the Demons to Unlock the Chamber of the Unforged
Each of the three demons, all called "The Formless One" is located in a different part of one of the exploration areas. You'll need to have unlocked the Hossberg Wetlands, Dock Town, and Arlathan Forest to access the demons' hideouts. Some areas are also not accessible without having done certain Companion Quests, which often make specific areas available to visit.
Arlathan Forest Demon
The demon in the Arlathan Forest is located in the northeastern part of the map, near a fast travel beacon for the Nameless Building section. You'll need to find your way over to the central tower, past some environmental puzzles involving Elven lasers and batteries.
Once you access the ruined tower, you'll notice one of the torches in the building glowing bright green. Inspect it to summon the demon.
This aspect of the Formless One fights like a caster-type foe, with a strong barrier and vulnerability to Electric damage, so companions like Bellara will make short work of its defenses. Kill it to receive some experience points and a boost to Faction Strength for the Mourn Watch and Veil Jumpers.
Dock Town Demon
The demon in Dock Town is found in the southeast section of the map, near the Spillway, a section that serves as the final boss location for the "Smuggled Relic Case" companion quest for Neve.
You'll see a glowing green torch in the area, which you can inspect to summon this aspect of the Formless One. This demon works like a Pride Demon, with vulnerability to Necrotic damage (bring Lucanis or Emmrich), and packs both a barrier and armor.
Defeat it for some Faction Strength for the Shadow Dragons and Mourn Watch.
Hossberg Wetlands
The demon in the Hossberg Wetlands is found in a place called Solitude's Edge, in the south of the map. This area is only accessible by completing the side quest "An Academic Interest," which involves investigating a mystery in Gaspin Manor. You may also come to this area by following the "Something Wrong" story quest.
Solitude's Edge is a partially submerged area containing a ruin and a large Blight Cyst that contains a Darkspawn Champion for the "The Heart of Corruption" and "Gate of Parched Hopes" side quests. Clear out the blight cyst if you haven't done so yet, as there's a chance you may accidentally set it off during your fight with the Formless One, forcing you to fight two boss-level enemies simultaneously.
This version of the demon is based on the Rage Demon, a large melee-based boss enemy. Bring a lot of Cold Damage or companions like Neve to maximize your fight efficiency. Defeating it will net you Mourn Watch and Grey Warden Faction Strength.
Unlocking the Chamber of the Unforged and Defeating the Formless One
Once you've defeated all three demons, you'll be able to unlock the door in the Chamber of the Unforged and go to battle against The Formless One.
The final form of the demon is that of a High Dragon. The Formless One is a level 40 boss, and attacks much like most dragon-type enemies do. It's vulnerable to Necrotic Damage, making Lucanis and Emmrich good choices of companion to have along.
The dragon will also use a laser-like sweeping attack and its tail and limbs to fight, so keep moving and move towards its tail when it charges its beam. Occasionally it will summon undead to attack you, so clear the crowds before pressing the attack.
Defeating the Formless One will clear the mission. Make sure to sweep the sides of the arena for treasure. You'll receive the unique armor suit Pillar of the Departed, as well as one of the "Circle" items needed to unlock the secret post-credits cutscene.
