Tactical RPG 'Project Triangle Strategy' Announced for Nintendo Switch, demo available on Nintendo eShop
A surprise highlight of today's Nintendo Direct, Square Enix and Nintendo announced Project Triangle Strategy, a new tactical RPG in the same 'HD-2D' format as 2018's Octopath Traveler. While the full game is not expected to release until 2022, a demo was made available on the eShop today for those eager to jump in early.
The full trailer for Project Triangle Strategy shows off several aspects of the game, including story premise, English voice acting, and a stated emphasis of making key decisions to determine the overarching narrative. Three nations come into conflict in a manner evocative of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, as they vie for control of the key materials of Salt and Iron, and the gameplay footage occurs on an isometric tactical grid reminiscent of, of course, Final Fantasy Tactics.
A major system around the 'Scales of Conviction' is detailed in the trailer footage, showing how story events can shift and permute if NPCs can be convinced to take certain actions -- which of course should result in large-scale story divergences, potentially similar to Tactics Ogre. All the footage, press details, as well as screenshots and artwork accompanying the announcement are listed below. The official Japanese website is here.
Project TRIANGLE STRATEGY, launching for Nintendo Switch in 2022, continues SQUARE-ENIX’s legacy of tactical RPGs. Featuring deep gameplay full of choices and consequences, strategically survey the battlefield to gain the upper hand.
Three nations battle for control of the dwindling resources of salt and iron
Command a group of warriors as Serenoa, heir to the Kingdom of Glenbrook in a tangled plot where your decisions make all the difference. Key choices you make will bolster one of three convictions—Utility, Morality, Liberty—which together make up Serenoa’s world view and influence how the story will unfold. When faced with truly momentous decisions, multiple characters will weigh in by casting their votes on the Scales of Conviction. In these moments, the allies and decisions you make can determine the fate of whole nations and the continent of Norzelia itself.
Control multi-tiered battlefields to strategically secure victory
Finding the best location in turn-based battles can tip the tide of combat in your favor. Position units on higher ground to take control of the battlefield and gain the advantage with increased range. You can also flank enemies on both sides, then strike from behind for a powerful follow-up attack. Elemental chain reactions are also an important part of combat. For example, use fire to melt icy terrain, then use lightning to electrocute it. Push the enemy into the electrified water to see sparks fly!
