The next console entry in the Mana series has started development
Closing out the Mana series 30th-anniversary live stream, producer Masaru Oyamada revealed that a new entry in the Mana series has begun development for consoles. This followed reveals in the stream for a mobile port for the Trials of Mana remake, as well as a new mobile game in Echoes of Mana.
At around the 2:28:00 mark in the live stream (embedded below), Oyamada wanted to reassure viewers that the series will have a new entry on consoles, but noted it is too early to show anything at the moment.
It would have been good if we could make a cool video announcement with a bang, but the 30th anniversary has just begun. To be honest, we are developing it. We are working on it, but please wait a little longer for the announcement. In fact, Mr. Ishii [Mana series creator, current CEO of Grezzo] took a look at it the other day. That's how far we've come, so I hope you'll look forward to it. We still have a long way to go in development.... We're preparing to release it on consoles, and we'd be glad if you can wait for it.
This is similar in vein to an announcement made by SaGa boss Akitoshi Kawazu a few months back, who revealed a new title in the SaGa series is in development in a similar manner, with no other details or title at all.
While Trials of Mana (2020) was a very solid remake of a cult-classic SFC game, it's been 14 years and counting since there's been *brand new* original non-mobile/non-browser entry in the Mana series - not since Heroes of Mana for the DS in 2007. If you want to exclude dedicated handhelds, there hasn't been a brand new non-remake console Mana title since Dawn of Mana in 2006. Regardless, it's been a while. We don't know if this new title is a mainline title, a spinoff, or another remake, but we're interested.
We'll just have to wait a little bit longer to see how the Mana series moves forward.
