Mother and Earthbound join Nintendo Switch Online library today
Nintendo announced it's adding the first two entries to the Mother series to the Nintendo Switch Online library today. Both Earthbound and Earthbound Beginnings launch for the publisher's premium service sometime soon. It's no Mother 3, but we'll take it.
Since the series' 1989, Nintendo has released both games outside of Japan, but not their 2006 follow-up in Mother 3. The naming scheme is a tad confusing, but folks in the West may know the original Mother as Earthbound Beginnings, while Mother 2 is simply Earthbound. Today's announcement brings both to the Nintendo Switch subscription service, which launched with a retro-packed library late last year.
Earthbound Beginnings (Mother), didn't make it to the West back when it first made its Japan debut. Nintendo wound up giving it the same naming scheme treatment and ported over to the Wii U's Virtual Console service back in 2015.

Join Ness, Paula, Jeff and Poo in their quest to fulfill an age-old prophecy to stop the wicked Giygas (and maybe catch a Runaway Five concert along the way) in the fan-favorite Super NES classic EarthBound. In addition, travel back to 198X for EarthBound Beginnings, a localized version of the original Famicom Mother game. Both EarthBound and EarthBound Beginnings are coming to Nintendo Switch Online ... later today!
