Persona series sells 1.65 million units in Japan
Atlus parent company Index Holdings has revealed that the Persona series has shifted a whopping 1.65 million units in Japan alone, marking impressive sales for the still-young series.
While Persona began on the original PlayStation, it was only with the release of Persona 3 that the series truly found its feet and found a style of gameplay that hit it off on a larger scale with customers in Japan - and also found increased success in the West.
Persona 4 is currently undergoing a major blitz of marketing, with an Anime adaptation of the game's plot airing on Japanese TV, a spin-off fighting game featuring Persona 3 and 4 characters battling it out in Persona 4-style environments in development for Arcades, PS3 and Xbox 360 and a remake of the original game scheduled to hit the PlayStation Vita at some point next year.
While the Persona team went on to make adult-themed puzzle game Catherine, indications out of Japan appear to be that they're working on a Persona 5 proper now, with Atlus confirming as far back as March 2010 that the game was in the planning phases.
