Sega launches Mega Drive Mini 2 on October 27 in Japan
Sega revealed the Mega Drive Mini 2 at their new project announcement stream held in Japanese on June 3. The company will release the new miniature console on October 27 in Japan, with a price tag of 10,978 yen.
Mega Drive Mini 2 will contain over 50 games, including Sega CD titles. The stream introduced the first 11 titles that are to be included there. While the stream delivered more tidbits, such as Fantasy Zone being a brand-new port for the platform or Sonic CD containing both the Japanese and American versions, we'd like to focus on the RPG-related titles that are included here.
The mini-console will include two titles from the Shining series: Shining Force CD and Shining in the Darkness. The latter also happens to be the first-ever title in the series, which came out in 1991. It will also have Popful Mail, a Sega CD action RPG made by Nihon Falcom and known for its voiceover feature. While Magical Taruruto is a pure action game, it's worth mentioning that this 1992 title was made by Game Freak of Pokemon fame; Ken Sugimori, Satoshi Tajiri, and Junichi Masuda were part of the game's development team.
The full list of games revealed at the live stream is as follows:
- Silpheed
- Shining Force CD
- Sonic the Hedgehog CD
- Mansion of Hidden Souls
- Popful Mail
- Virtua Racing
- Bonanza Bros.
- Shining in the Darkness
- Thunder Force IV
- Magical Taruruto
- Fantasy Zone
