Dragon Age: Absolution is a new animated series coming to Netflix
Dragon Age fans rejoice. In the blink of an eye, we went from expecting nothing new this year to getting an animated series on Netflix by year's end.
The show, titled Dragon Age: Absolution, will take place in the Tevinter Imperium and feature an elven protagonist. In BioWare tradition, the protagonist is joined by several companions from clearly diverse backgrounds, including humans and a Qunari.
A brief synopsis is as follows:
"Created in collaboration with BioWare, Dragon Age: Absolution is set in Tevinter and features an ensemble of new characters inspired by Dragon Age lore, including elves, mages, knights, Qunari, Red Templars, demons and other special surprises".
The showrunner is Mairghread Scott, a writer on previous animated series such as the Guardians of the Galaxy cartoon and Star Wars: Resistance. The animation studio, Reddog Culture House, has assisted in the production of quite a few prior projects including Centaurworld and The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.
We don't know much else — including the names of these characters — but given its Tevinter setting, I'd be shocked if none of these people are remotely relevant whenever Dragon Age: Dreadwolf finally gets its claws in us.
In the past, Dragon Age tie-in media has set the board for certain events in the main games, fleshing out the world in meaningful ways. For example, the novel Dragon Age: Asunder gave fans an extended introduction to Inquisition companion Cole.
The trailer doesn't seem to include any known elements regarding love/hate antagonist Solas nor his agents, so it's possible the villains here will be entirely separate. Then again, it's just a trailer — at very least, a nod or two to the Dread Wolf's antics over the course of the show would be a reasonable inclusion.
Dragon Age: Absolution will arrive on Netflix in December 2022.
