The version arriving on PC and Switch is a port of Taiwan-based Softstar Entertainment's Xuan-Yuan Sword 3, first released in 1999. The oldest and longest-running series of Chinese RPGs, Xuan-Yuan Sword is known for its historical fantasy settings and use of Chinese mythology and elements from wuxia fiction and legends.
This installment stars Septem, a Frankish knight ordered by King Pepin III to seek "the invincible arts of war" in the far east. He'll travel through the Arabian Empire and visit China under the Tang dynasty. The game also has a turn-based battle system inspired by martial arts, as well as an item refinement system that gives different results based on the cultural origin, whether Eastern or Western. Historical events like the Crusades, the Arabian Civil War, and China's An Lushan Rebellion are incorporated into the narrative. Its art style is also inspired by traditional Chinese ink painting.
Xuan-Yuan Sword: Mists Beyond the Mountain will launch on PC and Switch in 2023. Other titles in the series have been released on Steam but most besides the more recent Xuan-Yuan Sword VII are only available in Chinese.
