New features make dungeon exploration more enjoyable
For a smoother and more enjoyable experience, this latest installment of Shiren the Wanderer provides a range of player-friendly features so players can fully immerse themselves in the game world. Track your own steps on a mini-map, assign up to four projectiles and magic Staves to a hotbar for easy access, and "Handy Dash" to move quickly and easily throughout the dungeon.
Enhanced Live Display Mode
The game's enhanced Live Display Mode neatly presents information, such as character stats and inventory, on a single screen—perfect for streaming gameplay. Players can see details like Runes on Weapons and Shields and the items stored in Pots. Choose from two screen options to best suit your needs: a standard view that displays all essential information, and a simplified view.

Rescue and Other Online Elements
Should a player collapse in the middle of their dungeon adventure, they can call on other players for a Rescue to get them back on track. If successful, Rescued players can pick up right where they left off without losing any progress. Rescue can also be used while exploring dungeons in the story. Additional online features including details on "Parallel Play" will be announced at a later date.
Original (October 27)
Spike Chunsoft has published a new press release for Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island that reveals some of the upcoming title's gameplay and interface features. Many of these features will help improve the quality of life during gameplay.
The first feature shown is the mini-map display that will gradually show areas the player has discovered in the dungeon floor. The protagonist Shiren will be able to dash to reach certain destinations faster. The player can also set shortcuts to use up to 4 different items by combining the ZL button with any of the face buttons. And when Shiren loses all of his HP, the player will be given a limited amount of chances to request a rescue from other players to allow revivals without having to return and losing all items.
Also revealed in this press release is the Live Display screen mode. While this feature was first added in the Switch and PC ports of the prequel—The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate, it will appear from the first release of this new game with two different types.
Type 1 will feature the most comprehensive layout by showing the following entries:
- Playtime
- Current turn number
- Weapon and Armor strength levels
- Current and Max Power
- Experience points needed to next level
- Current condition
- Items in possession
- Item under the player's feet
Meanwhile, Type 2 will omit the last two entries and reduce the information screen size to give more space to the gameplay screen.
The Live Display screen will also be particularly useful when players broadcast their gameplay sessions on live streams. But while future releases on other platforms are not out of the question, this game is currently only slated for release on Nintendo Switch, which does not have a streaming feature on its own. As such, players who want to broadcast the game will first have to connect the console to a capture card.
Spike Chunsoft also teased more new gameplay features for the newest Shiren entry, such as Gigantic Bodies and the online Parallel Play system. They will publish more details about these features in the near future.
Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island, the sixth mainline title in the series, will be available for Nintendo Switch in Japan and East Asia on January 25, 2024, and in North America and Europe on February 27, 2024.
