Destiny 2: The Final Shape release date moved to June 2024
Destiny 2: The Final Shape still needs some time to get into its own final shape, according to developer Bungie. The studio announced that the game's next expansion will debut a few months later than first announced. Its new release date is June 4, 2024, a little more than three months after its originally scheduled release date of February 27, 2024. The news comes a little more than a month after news broke of mass layoffs at Bungie that impacted more than 100 employees. Those layoffs came as part of a cost-cutting initiative at Sony, which purchased Bungie in 2022.
In an announcement posted on November 28, 2023 via the game's official website, Bungie explained that the game needed more time "to become exactly what we want it to be," and would thus be pushed back to its new release date.
Bungie also detailed how the change would affect the game's release calendar. The current content season, titled "Season of the Wish," will be extended until June, adding three months to its running time. It was originally scheduled to end when the The Final Shape launched in February.
Bungie also plans to keep the game active with new content for all players between February and June. In February weekly progression-based quests called "Wishes" will launch, along with "Moments of Triumph", the game's regular achievement-based reward period. The class-versus-class Guardian Games competition will be rescheduled to March 2024, as well. In April 2024, an updated called Destiny 2: Into the Light will launch, designed to prepare players for the launch of The Final Shape, which will see Guardians enter the Traveler, the planetoid-like entity that powers much of Destiny 2's backstory. PVP adjustments and three new PVP maps will also arrive in May 2024.
Bungie ended the message with a promise to share more in detail in April 2024.
Destiny 2: The Final Shape will launch on PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on June 4, 2024, and its current season, Season of the Wish is ongoing. Check out our review of the current expansion, Lightfall.
