PS3 Allows Unexpected Levels of Customization
Early reports from journalists that have been playing around with PS3s indicate that two major areas of the console are comepletely customizable. Apprently on the system menu of the PS3 there's an option called "Install Other OS." which allows the consoles hard drive to be partitioned and another operating system to be installed. From the sound of the the online PS3 manual, it seems as if Sony are allowing anyone to create a PS3 OS:
"Install other system software on the hard disk. For information on types of compatible system software and obtaining the installer, visit Open Platform for PLAYSTATION™3. ... PLAYSTATION™3 allows any desired third-party system software to be installed on it besides its system software provided by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Details will be posted on this site soon."
There are also full instructions included with the console on how to remove and replace the included hard drive. This will allow the PS3 to have a huuuuge capacity for storage, and your own favoured OS, all without voiding your warranty. Maybe Sony weren't exaggerating when they said the PS3 was a PC...
