Destiny 2 Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, and The Witch Queen expansions go free for all players until June 3
In a bid to recapture lapsed players and help newcomers get up to speed on the story so far, Bungie has temporarily opened access to three major Destiny 2 expansions. Destiny 2: Shadowkeep, Destiny 2: Beyond Light, and Destiny 2: The Witch Queen are now available to access to all players until June 3, 2024. The next big expansion for Destiny 2, titled The Final Shape, will launch a day later, on June 4, 2024.
Released between 2019 and 2022, the expansions cover most of the story events and activities in Destiny 2 launched in the intervening years. Shadowkeep sees players make first contact with the infamous Pyramid Ships, the vanguards of what will later be known as The Witness, a paracausal being that caused the civilization-ending Collapse that ended Earth's golden age. Beyond Light brings players to the frozen moon of Europa to confront a Fallen leader attempting to court the Darkness. Players themselves can take on Darkness powers themselves, as the expansion unlocks access to the Stasis subclass. Finally, The Witch Queen puts players in conflict with Savathun, a leader of the Hive who manages to steal and wield the Light itself.
In addition to the campaigns and story beats, expansion-exclusive activities will be available to players for the Open Access period. These include quests for exotic weapons like the Deathbringer Rocket Launchers and Xenophage Machine Gun, as well as the Garden of Salvation, Deep Stone Crypt, and Vow of the Disciple expansion raids and their respective rewards.
On top of all that, activities and events for the ongoing Into the Light update, and the previous four seasons' worth of content are still active in Destiny 2, including one of the better fishing minigames to be found in an RPG.
PlayStation-based users with a PS Plus subscription also have an extra benefit: Destiny 2: Lightfall. The latest expansion is part of the May Monthly Game offering for PS Plus subscribers, meaning that players who opt to take up Destiny 2 on console have access to almost all the existing content in Destiny 2 without a prior purchase until The Final Shape launches.
Destiny 2 is available on PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
