Story-rich, social link-based RPG Sonzai delivers a new trailer filled with fully hand-drawn art
Developer 2 Odd Diodes and publisher Top Hat Studios have re-emerged with 2D action RPG Sonzai with a revamped look to the game since its initial reveal in August 2020. The developers now describe Sonzai as a "story-rich, social link-based" RPG that has elements of combo-based charaction games and JRPGs blended in.
Sonzai's new trailer and screenshots shows that the game is much more vibrant now, yet retains some key mechanics that were in its announcement several years ago - such as a calendar system with different phases of the day and 2D sidescrolling traversal.
This new batch of information for Sonzai shows off fishing and several personality stats, including Knowledge, Courage, Empathy, Charisma, and Perception that all affect how well a player is able to bond with other characters to advance their relationship with them. Additionally, there'll be Runes that players can buy that will affect how their combat skills function.
When Sonzai was announced in 2020, it was slated to release for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam). This new look at the game hasn't mentioned if those plans have changed or remained the same and no release date has been shared yet.

Hello everyone,
We're happy to announce that not only did we participate in this year's Guerrilla Collective showcase, but we got a spotlight showing by way of our publisher, Top Hat Studios! As part of their official showcase slot, we've debuted a brand new trailer. Since the Steam page went live and the game was revealed, the game has grown tremendously and received a massive overhaul from a quality perspective. They say greatness takes time, and the team has been extremely dedicated to crafting a truly one-of-a-kind experience.
You can view the full, newly revealed trailer above. SONZAI aims to be an extremely high quality, meticulously crafted experience, and we hope the new trailer reflects that. The team has taken a very perfectionist angle on development, and while we realize development has been taking quite a long time (and from the outside may seem nebulous), we can assure you the game has made great strides toward completion. We've also updated the Steam page to reflect more recent updates to the game's recent state, and the new trailer has been uploaded onto it also.
All in all, we thank you all for keeping up with the title, and we're excited to share more in the near future.
