Monster Hunter Wilds introduces its Basic Mechanics, new Focus Mode, and the Great Sword weapon

Capcom unveiled several new trailers for Monster Hunter Wilds that provide a more detailed introduction to its systems as it's leading up to the 2025 release of the hotly anticipated action RPG. They cover its Basic Mechanics, as well as provide greater insight to the new Focus Mode being introduced in this new Monster Hunter Entry. Plus, the Great Sword trailer marks the beginning of the many weapon-focused trailers that will be coming in the near future.

Monster Hunter Wilds is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam) in 2025 worldwide simultaneously. Capcom has previously announced that it will also support cross-play.

Monster Hunter Wilds - Basic Mechanics

The Basic Mechanics trailer covers basic knowledge for returning Monster Hunter players. Characters are more mobile and can recover their health with consumables when their weapon is sheathed. When they're ready to strike monsters, they must manually draw their weapons first at the cost of drastically reducing their overall mobility.

As introduced previously, Seikrets are the new creatures in Monster Hunter Wilds that players can mount. These agile creatures will allow players to recover their health and sharpen their weapons when they're on them. They also allow people to switch between a primary and secondary weapon out on the field, which allows players to vary up their attack options without returning to camp.

Hunters are armed with Slingers that provide some handy utility options during hunts. They can trigger interactions based on their ammo, such as one that fires off a bright flash to briefly stun monsters. Hook Slingers can also gather items from a distance, so players don't have to manually run over to them now.

Monster Hunter Wilds - Focus Mode

Focus Mode is a new mechanic making its debut in Monster Hunter Wilds. It allows hunters to correct their stance in order to aim their attacks or time their guards properly. For instance, a hunter with a Great Sword that is about to swing can turn their character right as they're about to bring down their weapon onto foes.

The video mentions that attacks and guards performed during Focus Mode will be aimed at where the player's camera is facing, so people have a better sense of where their actions are being directed.

Continually striking the same parts of a monster may open up a wound on them. Focus Mode will highlight these wounds with a bright red indicator, so they're easier to see; a monster's weak points will also be highlighted in Focus Mode. Attacking wounds will deal even greater damage to monsters than normal.

Additionally, every weapon type now has a new unique move called a Focus Strike. These special types of attacks specifically deal more damage to wounds and weak points.

Monster Hunter Wilds - Great Sword Weapon Overview

One of the most iconic weapon types in the Monster Hunter series. Althrough its attacks are on the slower side, the Great Sword can deal a devastating amount of damage in its attacks. Hunters can employ hit-and-run tactics and use the Great Sword itself to guard against incoming attacks.

When prepping for a big swing, hunters are granted a small amount of mobility to reposition themselves for the ideal angle that they desire.
