Robots at Midnight receives a playable demo on PC via Steam today

Finish Line Games is giving players a first hands-on experience with their upcoming sci-fi action RPG Robots at Midnight by releasing a playable demo for it on Steam today. The title was initially announced last November and is launching first on Xbox Series X|S and PC sometime in Q4 2024, but the developers mentioned that it will release "on other platforms to follow."

Players step into the shoes of Zoe as she navigates through the world of Yob. Finish Line Games describes Robots at Midnight as an action RPG that features "intense souls-like combat, satirical robots, giant mechanical monsters, and a rich narrative", so expect lots of combat encounters against mechanical abominations.

Independent game development studio Finish Line Games today announced it is releasing the first playable demo for its retro Sci-Fi Action-Adventure RPG Robots at Midnight today, downloadable for free on Steam. The developer is also onsite with a playable version of the game at this week’s Gamescom in Cologne as part of the Indie Arena booth (Hall 10, 2nd Level, Space F10).

Set in an expansive 1980’s Cassette Futurist world, this Action-RPG features intense souls-like combat, satirical robots, giant mechanical monsters, and a rich narrative discovered through exploration. Robots at Midnight follows Zoe, a scrappy and unlikely hero, as she searches and battles her way through the world of Yob, uncovering its secrets. Once a luxury destination now in ruins, Yob is an uninviting place overrun by robots – some friendly and others dangerous, and many that have begun to evolve, evoking questions of what it means to be sentient.

First revealed last November at the 41st Annual Golden Joystick Awards, Robots at Midnight was selected earlier this year for the highly curated PAX Rising 2024 Showcase at PAX East. The game was most recently featured as part of this year’s Summer Games Fest and The MIX Showcase in Los Angeles.

Developed by the same team that previously created popular indie games Skully, Maize, and Cel Damage HD, Robots at Midnight is a cosmic fantasy that features strategic, skill-based combat, fluid movements from climbing to dodging and flipping, an intense “Midnight Mode”, risk-reward choices and RPG progression tied to character growth, and an evocative storyline that provokes introspection.

“The team has been working hard to create a game that “feels” right and is both accessible and challenging in a genre that is historically known to be difficult,” said Daniel Posner, CEO and co-founder of Finish Line Games. “These showcases provide us with a great opportunity to promote the game, but also to get direct feedback from press and attendees, which is crucial as we fine-tune things. We’re excited for a wider audience to have access to the demo and see what we’ve been creating.”

The playable demo is available for download for free on Steam starting today. Robots at Midnight is slated for release in Q4 on PC and Xbox Series X/S consoles, with other platforms to follow.
