Freedom Wars Remastered releases for PS5, PS4, Switch, and PC Steam on January 10, 2025
Bandai Namco has made a surprise announcement revealing that they will release Freedom Wars Remastered for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. This title will be available almost simultaneously worldwide on January 10, 2025. As a side note, Japan will get the remaster on consoles one day earlier on January 9.
Freedom Wars is a cooperative action RPG that was originally published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation Vita in 2014. This game plays in a similar manner to the likes of Monster Hunter and God Eater, as it was released when games of the same genre were proliferating in Japan. However, it distinguishes itself with a Panopticon setting, where players must clear missions and rescue other civilians to have their sentence years reduced.
4Gamer and Famitsu have also uploaded interviews with Dimps' Takashi Tsukamoto and Tetsunosuke Seki that reveal more insights on the remaster. Tsukamoto used to be the director of the original release, of which Dimps was also its development studio, and he now become the remaster's development producer. While Dimps actually wanted to make a proper sequel to Freedom Wars, they received approval from Sony to release a remaster, and Bandai Namco afterward offered to publish it.
The interviews also revealed more details about the upcoming remaster. There will be full English voiceovers in addition to Japanese, but all players will only get to choose from Japan's 47 prefectures as their affiliated Panopticon as opposed to worldwide cities in the Vita's Western releases. This game will not have cross-play either, save for the internal PlayStation platform cross-play between PS4 and PS5.
