Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake TGS 2024 panel confirms the lack of Treasures n' Trapdoors board game
More details on the upcoming first three Dragon Quest HD-2D remakes were revealed at Square Enix's TGS 2024 panel for the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. The series creator Yuji Horii and the remake's producer Masaaki Hayasaka announced multiple tidbits (or the lack thereof) related to the upcoming remakes at the event.
The two revealed that the HD-2D remake of DQ III will have 3 copies of the Words of Wisdom book that lets a character change their Vocation to Sage. The personality test that appeared in the SFC/SNES version will also return here.
However, the two also confirmed that this remake will not have the Treasures n' Trapdoors board game (also known as Pachisi or its original Japanese name Sugoroku). As a side note, the board game did not appear in the original NES version either, as it only showed up in the SFC/SNES and Game Boy Color versions.
In addition, the two also made some mentions about the following HD-2D remakes of Dragon Quest I and II. While these remakes would be released later than Dragon Quest III in 2025, it would actually make sense in the universe's timeline-wise since the actual story order would be DQ III -> DQ I -> DQ II.
In fact, Yuji Horii also teased that the ending of the upcoming remake of Dragon Quest II will have a new surprise. Masaaki Hayasaka added that his team will not place any spoiler restrictions on the remakes since they want to encourage discussions and debates about the new story-based playing order.
The panel also included comparisons between the inaugural Famicom/NES version and the HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest III. If you want to watch the panel by yourself, an archived version of the panel's stream is available in Japanese right below. The Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC on November 14.
[Update (30 Sep): The initial version of this article mentioned that the personality test appeared in the Famicom/NES version. The correct one is that it first appeared in the SFC/SNES version, and we have updated the line accordingly. We apologize for this mistake.]
