Saber Interactive and Paramount Game Studios announce new Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG is development
Paramount Game Studios and Saber Interactive are working on a brand-new "AAA" RPG based on the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. More specifically, it'll be based on Avatar Legends, which is the umbrella name used to refer to the original Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series, its sequel, The Legend of Korra, and various related spin-offs.
The companies have announced the game, but it appears to be extremely early into development, as no assets were available to show, nor a release date mentioned. Saber and Paramount did confirm that the game will not be an adaptation of any specific Avatar Legends story, but instead follow a game-original narrative set thousands of years before The Last Airbender. Players will take on the role of a new, never-before-seen Avatar character. In its way, the new game seems to be quite a bit like Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic, but for the Avatar Legends setting.
The Avatar Legends setting is no stranger to game adaptations, though most date back to the PS2 and Wii eras. Of recent releases, 2023 saw action-adventure title Avatar: The Last Airbender: Quest for Balance land on PC and consoles. A mobile game, Avatar Generations, launched in January 2023, but shut down in December of the same year. Fortnite also launched a crossover with The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra in April 2024, adding playable skins based on Korra, Aang, Toph, Zuko and Katara, as well as various cosmetic items.
The Avatar Legends RPG is in development for unspecified platforms, with an undetermined release window. Check out more details in the full press release below.
Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender will soon be able to step into the expansive world of the beloved franchise like never before. Paramount Game Studios and Saber Interactive, in collaboration with Avatar Studios, are announcing today that they are developing a new AAA video game title based in the Avatar Legends universe, the franchise label centered on the world first introduced by Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.
Created for PC and consoles, the action-RPG title will follow a brand-new story, developed in close collaboration with Avatar Studios, which drops players into the world of the franchise where they can take on the role of an all-new, never-before-seen Avatar. Set thousands of years in the past, players can expect to be immersed in a vibrant world, master all four elements, engage in dynamic combat alongside companions, and experience the challenges and decisions that come with being the keeper of balance in the world. The game will include both familiar and new elements from the franchise, offering fans an opportunity to deeply connect to the world and become the hero of this unexplored era.
“We know loyal fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender have been eager for more stories that bring them into the universe of the show, and through gaming, we’re able to expand the world-building and allow fans to experience the new content in a completely immersive way,” said Doug Rosen, SVP, Games and Emerging Media at Paramount. “Saber Interactive has a proven track record in bringing IP-based games to life, and we are excited to co-fund this AAA title alongside them and let fans experience this world first-hand.”
“At Saber, we are all truly fans of the IP we work with,” said Josh Austin, Head of IP Development & Licensing, Saber Interactive. “Our team members are some of the most devoted, passionate creatives out there and it’s an honor to join forces with Avatar Studios and Paramount Games to further expand the Avatar Legends universe in video games. This unique co-fund structure is a result of our ever-expanding collaboration with Paramount, which started over a decade ago with WWZ, and we’re excited for all that’s on the horizon.”
The announcement of this new game comes after the success of several Paramount Game Studios titles, including Tribute Games and Dotemu’s Shredder’s Revenge, and Scopely’s Star Trek Fleet Command, as well as Saber Interactive’s recently released Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, currently one of the bestselling and top-rated games in the world. This new Avatar Legends title reflects the companies’ shared desire to continue their long-term strategic partnership to bring Paramount IP to life through gaming which includes World War Z, a now dominant game franchise with tens of millions of users, and the highly-anticipated A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead, releasing later this month.
