Universes Beyond - Final Fantasy Magic: The Gathering set is releasing in June
First announced back at last year’s GenCon, the Universes Beyond Final Fantasy x Magic: The Gathering set finally has a release date - June 13, 2025! Fans of Final Fantasy have eagerly been anticipating an update on the upcoming Universes Beyond set that looks to pull in Square’s historic series. Now we know a bit more about what players can expect next summer.
At a panel during this year's MagicCon: Vegas, Wizards shared a video of some team members behind the upcoming Universes Beyond release. The video gave us a few clues, including the release date and some card art.
Characters featured in the previews include:
- Lightning (FF13) - Artist: 志勇/shiyu
- Kefka (FF6) - Artist: Arif Wijaya
- Tidus and Yuna (FF10) - Artist: 藤木ゆう/Yuu Fujiki
- Moogle - Artist: Joseph Weston
- Sephiroth (FF7) - Artist: Wangjie Li
- Emet-Selch (FF14) - Artist: Néstor Ossandón Leal
Other inclusions - that didn’t get art previews - include confirmation of the appearance of Noctis, Cloud, Chocobos, and Behemoths, and teases such as “summons, monsters, and legendary weapons.” This set also promises to feature the most extensive collection of artwork for Final Fantasy in a single game from artists - both classic illustrations from “legendary Final Fantasy artists” and new pieces unique to this release.
There is still a lot of mystery surrounding the contents of the Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set, including unique mechanics, what the contents of the set will be (just decks, booster boxes, etc), and so much more. As a longtime fan of both Final Fantasy and Magic, I hope that we see Class-type enchantments make an appearance for some classic Final Fantasy staples like Blue Mage or Pictomancer or equipment like the Ultima Weapon or Squall’s gunblade.
We still have a ways to go yet until I can have Cloud working alongside Gandalf and Wolverine in a deck, but June will be here before we know it. In the meantime, though, if you’ve never played Magic and want to ensure you’re ready to play when the set drops, I highly recommend checking out Wizard’s brand-new Foundations set and Beginner Box products. These are wonderful products - especially the Beginner Box - that the game has needed for a long time and will go a long way in teaching brand-new players the workings of the game, available on November 15.
