Remedy Entertainment plans for Control 2 to be an action RPG
During Remedy Entertainment's Capital Markets Day 2024 presentation, they unveiled that Control 2, the highly anticipated to 2019 action-adventure game Control, is planned to be an action RPG. There's currently no new screenshots or footage that depicts how this genre shift will manifest, but several slides in their presentation describe Control 2 under the action RPG label.
Players step into shoes of Jesse Faden in the first installment of Control. They are tasked with investigating a place referred to as the 'Oldest House' in New York. It is the headquarters of Federal Bureau of Control and something sinister has invaded it. People must explore different parts of the facility, gather new powers for Jesse, and discover the nature of what has corrupted the Oldest House.
Subsequent downloadable content for Control has intertwined it with Remedy Entertainment's Alan Wake IP and Alan Wake 2 has further reinforced the series' connection with Control. Remedy Entertainment also plans to release FBC: Firebreak, a PvE shooter set in the same world as Control.
A recent example of a major genre shift to a more traditional RPG can be found in RGG Studio's Like A Dragon, formerly known as Yakuza, series when Yakuza: Like A Dragon transformed the mainline series into a turn-based RPG, after many entries as a beat 'em up brawler action game.
Control 2 is set to release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, but no release window or date has been shared yet. When it was initially announced, it was originally going to be co-developed and co-published with the publisher of the first Control title, 505 Games. Since then, Remedy Entertainment announced that it acquired the entirety of the Control IP from 505 Games back in February. Our many thanks to Gematsu for the heads-up on the news.
