South Park creators try to block sale of THQ's South Park game rights
South Park Studios, the company behind production of the show, has filed an objection to the sale of South Park: The Stick of Truth in THQ's bankruptcy proceedings.
It previously wasn't clear what the fate of the game would be given that THQ, its publisher, is going under while it's developers at Obsidian Entertainment and licensors at South Park Studios remain trouble-free.
The objection filed by the South Park creators' studio asks the court, convened today to see THQ's assets sold off to the highest bidder, to deny the sale of the RPG based on the series to another company unless the studio consents to the sale, recieves a payment of $2.275 million and is given "adequate assurances of future performance" of the title.
THQ's argues that the exclusive South Park license the company was granted as part of the deal to publish The Stick of Truth should be allowed, and cite certain laws to back it up.
Companies present at the sale include Electronic Arts and Warner Bros among others.
The court will decide the fate of the game, but folks shouldn't worry - this thing is so close to being done that somebody will end up publishing it one way or another. The question now is who and when. The sale takes place today.
