Branching Path: Delving into the spritely world of Owlboy
Boy, it feels like it has been forever since we heard about Owlboy. This action platformer has been in development going on 8 years now. The last time we heard anything about this indie darling, there was a demo released in 2011. Since then, developer D-Pad Studio released an entirely separate game - Savant - which may have helped cover the costs of the remaining .
Whatever the case may be, imagine my surprise when someone from D-Pad reached out to our site and offered us a press demo ahead of this weekend's PAX West event being held in Seattle. The developers are promising an actual release date.
I would like to personally congratulate the team for being able to follow through with their dreams. I am sure a lot of people who have been quietly waiting for news on this beautiful-looking game are very excited to finally get their hands on it.
And I get to rub it in their faces since I got to try out the demo for myself!
The PAX West demo is about an hour long as you can see in the video above, exploring the beginning section of the game up until we are introduced to the overarching narrative. Despite it being short, I had a great time. The characters are extremely likeable, the soundtrack is gorgeous, and those sprite-based visuals are a sight to behold. I hope you guys enjoy a taste of this adorable game as much as I did!
I would like to apologize for the sound mixing in the video. I accidentally recorded the game through OBS with both the desktop audio and my mic on the same track. Going forward, expect much higher quality editing - though that's mostly for my sake.
