Summer Games Done Quick 2017 is this weekend - here are all the RPGs that will be there!
For those unaware, Summer Games Done Quick is an annual event that falls around this time of year. It's where some of the world's best speedrunners gather together in one place to try and beat games fast! The categories can be wildly different, from beating the game as quickly as possible by any means, to attempting to 100% the game with all of the collectibles and quests.
The festivities kick off this Sunday, July 2 and will run until July 9. It's actually running a little later into the night on Saturday than usual, with the finale happening on Sunday.
As was the case last year, all donations this year will go towards Doctors Without Borders, a humanitarian organization where medical professionals visit war-torn areas and developing countries and help the people in need, especially those affected by epidemic diseases.
Those who donate have a chance to win various prizes, and the entire event will be streamed online.
In this article, we'll run down all of the RPGs that will be featured during the marathon! If you'd like to see the rest of the schedule, you can check it out here. The times will be adjusted as the event goes on based on how long the races go, so be sure to check that link periodically while you're enjoying the show.
There are also bonus games that will act as incentives for donators including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, so be sure to donate if you want to see it!
Nier Automata - Sunday, July 2 at 10:00 AM PDT
It all begins with Nier Automata serving as the show opener (or maybe a showstopper). It will be performed by Halfcoordinated with an "Ending A Normal Difficulty (one-handed)" category.
You may remember Halfcoordinated as the person who did the amazing Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight run from this year's Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ) that had the internet buzzing. It was easily one of the best runs of the entire marathon with plenty of heart, so I highly recommend you checking it out!
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Sunday, July 2 at 8:21 PM PDT
Dr4gonBlitz is one of the top SotN runners out there, and he will be taking the controller for an "Any% Glitchless" run. As it stands, he's only a second behind the current world-record holder for Alucard, so there's a real potential for a new record to be set during the event. So long as the marathon jitters don't kick in.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD - Wednesday, July 5 at 4:16 PM PDT
Current world record holder Pheenoh will be doing an "Any%" run for this event. The guy's a bit of a beast when it comes to Twilight Princess HD, sitting quite nicely at six minutes ahead of second place. Expect some crazy tricks to be pulled off that you may want to take note of.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Wednesday, July 5 at 8:11 PM PDT
GarishGoblin will be making an appearance with the game that he is best known for with an "Any%, No Out-of-Bounds" run. He is the current (as of this publishing) world record holder in this category with a completion time for 26 minutes, 51 seconds. So, this should be pretty good.
Divinity: Original Sin - Wednesday, July 5 at 9:01 PM PDT
This will be the first appearance of our favorite game of 2014 and it will be an "Any% (Co-Op)" attempt Shaddex and DrTChops. If you'd like to see what the game is like, you can check out their submission video for the marathon.
Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven - Wednesday, July 5 at 9:41 PM PDT
CapnClever is one of the best speedrunners in the Might & Magic VI community. And considering Might & Magic VI is easily one of the best entries in this series, this should be a fun show for cRPG fans!
Ys Origin - Wednesday, July 5 at 10:21 PM PDT
Falcom games are always enjoyable during a speedrun event, so it's good to see the Ys series getting some representation in the form of Ys Origin, thanks to Ghost King. He will be doing an "Any% Toal EX" run, as in he will be playing the EX version of Toal, which is a great time.
Chrono Trigger - Thursday, July 6 at 1:33 PM PDT
This is a personal favorite of mine as this "Any% (No Wrong Warp)" run will be done by the man, the myth, and the legend that is puwexil, sort of a celebrity among speedrunners. Okay, I may be giving him a lot of credit, but he basically is renown for his ability to speedrun multiple RPGs.
Not only does he tend to 100% these games, but he will create a speedrunning guide of sorts for each of them. This clearly takes a lot of work, and it's obviously the man loves RPGs. It's worth watching for that alone, not just because Chrono Trigger is such a great game.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - Thursday, July 6 at 8:18 PM PDT
Current world record holder Andy will be doing an "All Dungeons (Swordless)" run of A Link to the Past which will feature major glitches as part of the attempt. I remember watching this in the past and having it absolutely blow my mind. This actually kicks off a Zelda block that will also include Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, so stick around if you're a Zelda fan!
Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix - Friday, July 7 at 9:27 AM PDT
Yet another highly entertaining run, Bl00dyBizkitz will be doing an "Any% (Critical Mode)" attempt at this year's SGDQ. It's always a treat seeing this game getting absolutely destroyed, especially in a category that's just amazing to watch. He makes it look so easy!
Final Fantasy VII - Friday, July 7 at 8:22 PM PDT
Okay, I'm a little biased here, but I'm very happy Final Fantasy VII will be making an appearance! It's been a couple years since the coveted RPG made an appearance in the event, but now it's back care of ajneb174 with an "Any% No Slots" run. He is the current world recorder holder for this category, at least for the digital release. Personally, I can't wait for this!
Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction - Saturday, July 8 at 7:44 AM PDT
MrLlamaSC will be doing an "Any% Normal Assassin" attempt for this game. He counts himself among the best players of this game and he's made numerous appearances at AGDQ and SGDQ to show off his abilities. So yeah, he knows how to kill Diablo real good.
Dark Souls 3 - Saturday, July 8 at 9:39 AM PDT
The Soulsborne series is always some of the most entertaining games to check out during a speedrun competition, or anywhere really. ThorW will be doing an "All Bosses /w DLC1" run for SGDQ. I've had the chance to watch ThorW speedrun this game in the past and the dude manages to pull off some ridiculous tricks. Should be a good watch!
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Saturday, July 8 at 3:22 PM PDT
We're in for a long one with this game. TrevPerson will be doing an "All Masks" attempt, a category that he currently holds the world record for. As one of my favorite Zelda games, you need to watch this one!
Earthbound - Saturday, July 8 at 7:22 PM PDT
It all comes down to this. Earthbound will be the final game of the marathon. UltimoIce is helping to close out the festivities with an "Any% Glitchless" run. We should be in for a highly entertaining experience!
So there you have it, that's all of the RPGs from the event, and there's a lot of them. But that's only a fraction of the many other games that will be playedthroughout the entire week. Are there any titles you're particularly excited for? Let us know!
