Tokyo Game Show 2024 - List of expected RPG-related streams
It's almost that time of the year again. Tokyo Game Show 2024 will be held in the following week on September 26-29. The event will mostly take place physically at Makuhari Messe, and our correspondent James Galizio will be there in person to get first-hand impressions of demos for upcoming RPGs.
But for those of us who cannot make the trip to Japan, there will also be live streams held around the event's duration. And just like the prior years, we have compiled a list of streams that will cover notable RPG titles we have also been covering.
Be advised, though, that we only include streams that have confirmed or highly probable related content. For example, while SNK has announced a Samurai Shodown action RPG, we are not completely sure yet whether their official stream on Thursday will include the project, as they usually focus more on their mainline fighting games.
You can find the list, which has been ordered by the streaming times, right below.
Bandai Namco - Tales of Graces f Remastered
The first RPG-related stream is going to be a complete outlier from a company that's also been trying to reduce their presence in the annual TGS events. Tales of Graces f Remastered is the only RPG title Bandai Namco included on their TGS 2024 website (since Sword Art Online: Fractured Daydream is much more focused on the action gameplay), but it will not have a playable demo at the venue. In fact, Bandai Namco will hold its stream days before TGS 2024 actually starts, and right on the Japanese autumnal equinox holiday too on top of that.
Those who want to catch the Tales of Graces f Remastered stream will want to mark the schedule on Monday, September 23 at 19:00 JST (10:00 AM UTC). The stream should appear somewhere in Bandai Namco's Japanese YouTube channel around that time.
Ubisoft - Assassin's Creed Shadows (Update: Cancelled)
Ubisoft will be the first stream in the actual TGS 2024 Official Program to have a title related to us, which is Assassin's Creed Shadows. This is also the series' first major title to take place in Japan, so it will be interesting to see how the company will promote the game directly to the country's audience.
The Ubisoft stream will go live on Thursday, September 26 at 15:00 JST (06:00 AM UTC).
UPDATE: Ubisoft's Japanese X account has since announced that they are canceling their TGS 2024 online program. That means the above stream will not happen at all.
Microsoft - Xbox Games Showcase
The TGS edition of Xbox Games Showcase will return once again in 2024, and it will also kick off the prime-time waves of official streams on Thursday, September 26 at 19:00 JST (10:00 AM UTC).
Prior year editions of the showcase had featured exclusive premiere game footage, and Microsoft had also secured deals from the likes of Atlus to have Xbox-first promotions for titles like Metaphor: ReFantazio, so it would not be too surprising if we do see such footage again this year.
Level-5 - Fantasy Life i and Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road
While Level-5 featured 5 games last year, only Megaton Musashi Wired among them had gone to see the light of day in a worldwide release last April. The company will return this year to intensify promotions for most of their remaining titles.
The Level-5 stream will happen on Thursday, September 26 at 22:00 JST (13:00 UTC), and it will have a focus on Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road and Fantasy Life i. And despite not being an RPG, the new puzzle game Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is also worth looking forward to. Those who are anticipating Decapolice will have to wait longer though, as Level-5 has already confirmed that this title got delayed further than the rest.
Capcom - Monster Hunter Wilds
Capcom's TGS 2024 program will conclude the prime-time stream session on Thursday, September 26 at 23:00 JST (14:00 UTC).
All eyes will be obviously focused on Monster Hunter Wilds here, as it will be the only title they're showcasing that's also not released yet by the time the program goes live. We can thus expect it to have another long trailer detailing new monsters and/or biomes just like in last August's Gamescom.
Aniplex - The Hundred Line
Aniplex has confirmed that their official TGS 2024 program on Friday, September 27 at 18:00 JST (09:00 AM UTC) will be completely dedicated to The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy-.
This is one of the new games being worked on by Kazutaka Kodaka's Too Kyo Games, so fans of his works like the Danganronpa series will definitely not want to miss the stream for the upcoming adventure-strategy RPG.
Sega & Atlus - Metaphor: ReFantazio
If the Metaphor: ReFantazio trailer did not appear at the above Xbox showcase, the next chance you can catch the game will be at Sega and Atlus' joint program on Friday, September 27 at 19:00 JST (10:00 AM UTC). We don't know yet how substantial the information from this stream will be, as the companies will also lump all of their games and third-party partner titles that have playable demos on their booth in this stream.
In addition, while Sega has also revealed Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii just before this article went up, the company has yet to confirm its inclusion in their TGS lineup as of this writing.
Koei Tecmo - Fairy Tail 2 and Atelier Yumia
Koei Tecmo will showcase most of their titles on their own stream on Friday, September 27. The segments relevant to us will be the Atelier segment at 17:50 JST (08:50 AM UTC), which covers the live service game Atelier Resleriana and the recently revealed new mainline console entry Atelier Yumia, as well as Fairy Tail 2 at 19:00 JST (10:00 AM UTC) which will also have playable demo builds at the physical venue.
As a side note, the other game Koei Tecmo is highlighting at TGS 2024—Dynasty Warriors: Origins—technically only counts as a tactical action game, but it may also be considered as an RPG as it will retell the story of Romance of the Three Kingdoms almost exclusively from the eyes of an original protagonist.
Square Enix
Square Enix will kick off their TGS 2024 streams with an official program on Friday, September 27 at 21:00 JST (12:00 PM UTC). While the official stream still stars the Japanese celebrity Eiko Kano like in prior years, this year's edition should be more watchable to the global audience as there will also be a focus on the gameplay footage for the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake.
As usual, though, Square Enix will have more interesting streams covering more games like Fantasian: Neo Dimension and Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on their own channel. For more details, you can check our separate article dedicated to the company.
Konami - Suikoden I&II HD Remaster
Following the initial reveal in the 2022 event, Konami will return to TGS 2024 with another talk show for Suikoden I&II HD Remaster, which also already has its release date confirmed for next March in 2025.
Konami's description of this event seems to hint that the panelists—including the first Suikoden's character designer Junko Kawano—will mostly have behind-the-scenes talks on the development for the original PS1 version releases. If you want to go back to the past with them, you can catch the stream on Saturday, September 28 at 12:00 JST (03:00 AM UTC).
Sony Interactive Entertainment
Sony is making a major physical return to TGS for the first time in their PS5 era. Although it remains to be seen if they will hold a State of Play program before the big event, the company has confirmed that they will have a booth in the venue that hosts both PS5 game demos and live shows related to them.
The shows will also be streamed on the Japanese PlayStation YouTube channel. The two shows that will be relevant to us are Metaphor: ReFantazio on Saturday, September 28 at 16:00 JST (09:00 AM UTC) and Monster Hunter Wilds on Sunday, September 29 at 12:00 JST (03:00 AM UTC).
Nihon Falcom - The Legend of Heroes: Kai no Kiseki
The last title we have on our list is Nihon Falcom's The Legend of Heroes: Kai no Kiseki ~Farewell, O Zemuria~, which is also the direct sequel to Trails through Daybreak II. But the staggered localization releases aside, the new entry will also be already released right as the whole TGS event starts on the 26th, so the streams related to the game will be mostly just intended for fun.
Falcom will hold two live concerts by the Falcom jdk Band on Saturday, September 28 at 16:00 JST (07:00 AM UTC) and Sunday, September 29 at 10:00 JST (01:00 AM UTC). There will also be a Japanese talk show on Sunday at 12:45 JST (03:45 UTC), but since it specifically covers Kai no Kiseki even the lighthearted banters may contain spoilers for the whole series, so watch it at your own discretion.
